Chris Sutton has aimed a dig at Tottenham Hotspur fans over Ange Postecoglou while discussing Gareth Southgate’s recent links to the Premier League.

Ange Postecoglou was hardly the favoured choice among the Tottenham faithful before arriving in north London over the summer.

Spurs had been linked with a host of names before eventually hiring the Aussie boss in June last year, including the likes of Julian Nagelsmann and Arne Slot.

Some Tottenham fans even took to social media to express their disappointment over the former Celtic man’s arrival.

Indeed, some fans launched ‘#NoToPostecoglou’ on X, formerly known as Twitter, ahead of his appointment, which quickly died down after he made an impression during pre-season.

Now, Manchester United fans haven’t exactly reacted well to speculation that England boss Gareth Southgate could replace Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford. And Chris Sutton was keen to point out the reaction to Postecoglou being linked with Spurs while discussing Southgate’s credentials.

Speaking on It’s All Kicking Off!, Sutton insisted that Southgate deserves more respect and aimed a dig at Spurs fans.

“He deserves far greater respect, Gareth Southgate,” he said. “Just remember the Tottenham fans who were hashtag Postecoglou out before he went in at Tottenham. Who are these fools? Ridiculous.”

Postecoglou has won over Tottenham fans

It’s been some turnaround for Postecoglou at Spurs so far. He arrived with plenty of doubters but the majority of Tottenham fans are fully behind the Aussie now.

He walked into a difficult situation last summer on the back of a poor season at Spurs under Antonio Conte.

That would partly explain why some Spurs fans were underwhelmed by the arrival of a manager yet to prove himself in the Premier League.

While his Tottenham side have been found wanting on the odd occasion this season, the progression under his guidance is there for all to see.
