BBC pundit Chris Sutton is adamant that Arsenal star Aaron Ramsdale has been way better than Jordan Pickford this season, but Karen Carney still believes the Everton man will remain England’s number one.
Ramsdale has been one of the signings of the season so far. He was branded by almost everyone as a poor buy, but Mikel Arteta was convinced that he’s the right man for the job.
The Arsenal boss received a ton of stick from some fans, pundits and the media for his decision to sign the Englishman from relegated Sheffield United, but now, he has been proved right.
Many people agree now that Ramsdale, branded as ‘fantastic’ by Steve Nicol, should be England’s number one for the World Cup ahead of Pickford. Carney, however, believes Gareth Southgate will stick with the Everton man no matter what.
Chris Sutton and Karen Carney disagree about Arsenal star Aaron Ramsdale
Speaking on The Monday Night Club, Sutton said: “There are starting places up for grabs. I know he (Southgate) likes Jordan Pickford, he loves Jordan Pickford, but there’s a strong argument to say that Ramsdale has been a far better goalkeeper for Arsenal than Pickford has been for Everton.”
Carney responded by signing: “Pickford’s a definite (starter).
“In 21 games he has conceded six. He stays loyal, Gareth Southgate, he doesn’t really change. He hasn’t let him down for England, he was player of the match the other day, outstanding.
“You could say his performances haven’t been good (at club level) but is that down to Everton? Is that down to their defence? Is that down to their season? He has never let England down, he was brilliant in the Euros and outstanding the other night!”

TBR View:
Sutton and Carney are both right, in a way.
The former is spot on when he says Ramsdale has been better than Pickford this season. The Arsenal man has arguably been the best goalkeeper in the country since he got into the side, and that’s no exaggeration at all.
However, Southgate has always shown that he is loyal to the players who have served him well before. Pickford definitely checks that box thanks to his outstanding display at the Euros last year and even at the World Cup in 2018.
It is very likely that the £30 million Everton man will keep his place, but if just form this season is to be considered, it simply has to be Ramsdale when England head out to Qatar at the end of this year.
