Arsenal have been handed a blow after Jorrel Hato signed a new contract with Ajax.

The 18-year-old has penned a deal running until July 2028.

So, why does a new contract for Jorrel Hato signal bad news for Arsenal? Let’s take a look…

Arsenal were going to bid for Jorrel Hato

Well – according to Football London – Arsenal were planning to make a move for the Dutchman this summer if he didn’t sign a new contract at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Hato’s previous deal had just over 12 months remaining and expired in July 2025 – so you can see why Arsenal sensed a potential market opportunity if his situation stayed the same.

However, the talented teenager – who Jordan Henderson called “fantastic” – has now committed his future to Ajax following a remarkable breakthrough into the senior setup.

Hato has already captained the Dutch giants – becoming the youngest player in the club’s history to do so – while shining on the left and in the centre of defence.

The Netherlands international has made 37 appearances in all competitions so far this season, scoring one goal while also providing three assists.

The Dutchman could end up in north London one day

Interestingly, Hato admitted in 2023 that it is a “dream” of his to play for Arsenal.

When asked about Jurrien Timber joining the Gunners, the Ajax No.4 told ELF Voetbal: “Unfortunately he (Timber) was seriously injured in his first Premier League game for Arsenal, but he is still young and has a bright future ahead of him.

“In any case, the move to Arsenal was a wonderful one for him. It is also my dream to one day make such a transfer, but I realise that I still have a very long way to go.”

Therefore, if Hato continues to impress in Amsterdam, don’t be surprised to see Arsenal make a move to secure his signature later down the line.
