Liverpool target Martin Zubimendi has been on Arsenal’s radar for a long time.
Both clubs have been on the lookout for reinforcements in midfield for over a year now, and the one common name on their wish lists has been that of the Real Sociedad star.
Arsenal were really pushing to sign Zubimendi in 2022 and 2023, but despite Mikel Arteta and Edu’s best efforts, they could not convince him to join them.
Now, Liverpool want to sign Zubimendi and have made him their top target in this summer’s transfer window.
Fabrizio Romano says Arsenal have held no talks to sign Zubimendi this summer
Zubimendi has been a target for Arsenal for a long time.
Arteta follows Real Sociedad very closely and he has been a big fan of the Spanish midfielder for well over a year now.
Reports have claimed that Arsenal’s staff were even pushing Arteta to sign Zubimendi a few months ago. He checks a lot of boxes for them.
However, Liverpool seem like the favourites to sign Zubimendi in this window, and Romano has shared some good news for Reds fans.
The journalist has revealed that Arsenal have held no negotiations to sign Zubimendi this summer. He has also claimed that he has heard nothing about Manchester United’s interest either.
That means Liverpool, at this moment in time, are the only club in the race to sign Zubimendi. That should give them an edge.
Romano said in his Daily Briefing: “Liverpool are now working on the player side, because many clubs tried to convince Zubimendi in the last couple of years – Barca, Bayern, Arsenal, many clubs spoke to the player, he wasn’t keen on the move, but now Liverpool are going very big.
“They are using the ability of their directors to convince the player, present the contract proposal, and find a way to get the deal done.
“Contacts are ongoing with both player and club. Liverpool want Zubimendi and they are confident, optimistic to make it happen while there are still steps to follow on this story to get it done.
“It’s important also to clarify that Arsenal were never negotiating for Zubimendi this summer, while I’ve never heard anything concrete about Man United so far.”

What Real Sociedad are expecting Zubimendi to do
A number of clubs have been keen to sign Zubimendi over the years.
Barcelona and Bayern Munich have been admirers of the Spaniard, while Arsenal had him on top of their wish list for over a year. However, all of these clubs failed to convince Zubimendi to leave Real Sociedad.
Now, things could change.
David Ornstein has revealed that Real Sociedad expect Zubimendi to accept Liverpool’s offer to join them before the window shuts.
All that’s left now is the transfer fee. Liverpool will either have to negotiate a deal with Sociedad or trigger his release clause to get their man.
Nothing’s done yet, but things are looking positive for Liverpool.
