Liverpool are yet to make a signing in this transfer window, but that could be about to change.

Indeed, while the Reds have been knocked back by Martin Zubimendi in recent days, the Merseyside club are stepping up their interest in another target.

Liverpool are keen to sign Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, and according to Fabrizio Romano, this deal is now heading in the right direction.

Giorgi Mamardashvili agrees personal terms with Liverpool

According to Romano, Giorgi Mamardashvili has now agreed personal terms with Liverpool.

The ‘outstanding’ goalkeeper is ready to sign for the Reds before going out on loan elsewhere this summer.

The Georgian goalkeeper is apparently a loan target for Bournemouth, and after his loan spell he’s being earmarked as a replacement for Alisson.

Alisson is, of course, arguably the best goalkeeper in the world right now, and it’s understandable that Liverpool don’t want to bring Mamardashvili in to be a starter straight away.

However, with Alisson being linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, a spot could open up for Mamardashvili in a couple of years’ time.

Giorgi Mamardashvili could be Liverpool’s Thibaut Courtois

Signing a replacement for your first-choice goalkeeper years ahead of time is not a bad idea at all.

Indeed, this is a strategy that we’ve seen utilised to great effect in the past.

Thibaut Courtois was signed by Chelsea to be Petr Cech’s replacement, and after a few years out on loan at Atletico Madrid, the Belgian was ready to take Cech’s place.

Mamardashvili will be on that same trajectory at Liverpool, and based on his performances for Valencia in recent years, he’s certainly good enough to eventually step into Alisson’s spot.

What this means for Caoimhin Kelleher remains to be seen, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Irishman was on the move in the near future as his long-term prospects at Anfield now look bleak.
