One Tottenham Hotspur player is on the verge of leaving the club this summer.
The North Londoners are currently away on their pre-season tour, but work is still going on behind the scenes with respect to transfers.
Tottenham fans are desperate to see new signings ahead of the start of the 2024/25 Premier League season, but outgoings are important too.
Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed that one Spurs player is about to leave the club, but there is a twist.
Fabrizio Romano shares transfer update about Tottenham’s Bryan Gil
It has been known for several months now that Bryan Gil has no future at Tottenham.
The ‘superstar‘ Spaniard, who joined the club back in 2021, just hasn’t delivered. No Spurs manager has had any real faith in him, and his time in North London is up.
Reports have claimed that La Liga side Girona are really keen to sign Gil this summer. It was even reported that Girona had practically wrapped up the Gil deal.
Romano has now had his say, and there is a small twist that not many people were expecting.
The Spanish attacker has extended his contract at Tottenham, and he is on his way to join Girona on a season-long loan deal.
Spurs have now added a release clause into his new contract worth €15 million (£12.7m), and Girona will have the first option to trigger that in 2025.
If the Spanish side refuses, other clubs will be given the opportunity to sign Gil for that pre-decided fee.
Romano tweeted: “Bryan Gil to Girona, here we go! Deal agreed for Spanish winger to join on initial loan from Spurs.
“Exclusive details: Bryan Gil will extend his contract at THFC with €15m release clause. Girona have priority to sign him… or other clubs can do it, up to the player.”
Tottenham may have pulled off a masterstroke
Gil was always going to leave Tottenham this summer.
The Spaniard has been desperate to move on, and Spurs have been trying to get rid of him over the last few windows as well.
If Tottenham had actually sold Gil in this window, they couldn’t have expected to receive a lot of money for him from Girona or any other club.
However, now, after adding the €15m release clause in his deal, they could potentially get the full amount if Gil goes on to have a fine season in Spain.
It will be interesting to see how Gil will fare at Girona, who will play in the Champions League in the 2024/25 season.
