Fabrizio Romano says he wouldn’t be shocked if Liverpool went for £53m player in January

Liverpool had a semi-successful summer transfer window as they signed Federico Chiesa for a bargain fee.

However, as always, there’s room for improvement on the transfer front, and there’s still a big hole in the holding midfield position at Anfield.

Fabinho still hasn’t been adequately replaced, but it hasn’t been for the lack of trying.

Liverpool made a massive bid for Moises Caicedo last summer, while Martin Zubimendi was a top target in the last transfer window.

Speaking on The Debrief, Fabrizio Romano has been discussing Liverpool’s hunt for a new midfielder, and he says he wouldn’t be shocked if the Reds went back in for Zubimendi in January.

Liverpool could go back for Martin Zubimendi

Romano shared what he knows about Liverpool’s plans.

“I don’t think it’s something they have decided now to be honest. From the player’s side, the club’s side. They haven’t decided anything for January or the summer.

“There isn’t a plan to attack the situation again of Martin Zubimendi in January or next summer. We know how Liverpool work, they didn’t sign another player in that position because they believe the perfect player for that position is Martin Zubimendi for the idea of football they have and Arne Slot.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Liverpool decided to return for Zubimendi. The interest was super strong, Liverpool tried in every way to make this deal happen on player’s side, they were prepared to pay the release clause, and they also discussed the idea to send Stefan Bajcetic there on loan.”

Martin Zubimendi move won’t be easy

Liverpool could go in for Zubimendi in January, but this move won’t be easy.

Yes, there is a £53m release clause in place, but the player has, so far, remained fiercely loyal to Real Sociedad.

Zubimendi has shown no intention of leaving San Sebastian in recent years, and after a big push this summer, it’s hard to see how Liverpool will turn his head in the next transfer window.

This may be a deal that is just too difficult for the Reds.
