The Tottenham Hotspur managerial go-round has returned to square one. A move to sign Paulo Fonseca hit the skids earlier this week, and immediate reports to get Gennaro Gattuso have been thrown in the bin – due to a backlash form fans. Now, Fabrizio Romano has given a new update.
Fonseca, 48, was expected to replace Jose Mourinho – with the latter having joined Fonseca’s old side Roma. But a financial issue has seen such a move break down and it is claimed that Fonseca is now a front runner for the Fiorentina job. The Italian side lost Gennaro Gattuso after just 22 days.
Gattuso was on the cards for Spurs. But a backlash from fans surrounding his views on same-sex marriage among other political issues has seen Spurs throw talks into the bin. Mauricio Pochettino has been linked but PSG will not let him go – and now Romano has commented on the trio.
Who should Tottenham go after now – after Romano claim on three previously-linked managers?
Well, Erik Ten Hag is likely to remain high on the shortlist. He has been strongly linked, but he has signed a contract extension at Ajax. Ten Hag might still be keen, though it would require a sizeable fee. Meanwhile, Roberto Martinez is being linked – but is with Belgium at Euro 2020.
Spurs need to move fast and there are plenty of options on the sidelines without a job. But the right option, right now, is Ten Hag. He has starred as Ajax gaffer, he plays attacking football with plenty of freedom. But Romano has confirmed that Tottenham going back in for the three – Fonseca, Gattuso or Pochettino – will not happen.
