'Exploited': Eddie Howe shares what Arsenal did in second half which played right into Newcastle's hands
Eddie Howe says Newcastle exploited Arsenal when they pushed forward in the second half of last night’s game.
The Gunners needed to win to keep their hopes of Champions League qualification in their own hands but their performance was nowhere near the level required.
A Ben White own goal put Newcastle ahead before Bruno Guimaraes sealed the victory to put Tottenham within one point of next season’s Champions League.
Howe has done an outstanding job at Newcastle since taking over from Steve Bruce and last night, his side once again showcased what they can do when they get on the front foot and use their pace.
Howe says Newcastle exploited Arsenal
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Howe said: “We know that they had a couple of injury concerns.
“So we wanted to make a quick game.
“I thought Arsenal competed well and fought to win the game and they really went for it in the second-half, which left spaces which we exploited.”
Perhaps some watching on would debate Howe’s claim about how well Arsenal fought. Newcastle were better all over the park, but the Englishman is perhaps just trying to be magnanimous.
Arsenal are now in the unenviable position of needing a favour from Norwich, who are already relegated and have absolutely nothing to play for.
Meanwhile, the Gunners host Everton, who could well be fighting for their Premier League lives on the final day of the season.
It does not look good, and Arsenal have got their last two games all wrong, and look like coming fifth as a result now.
