‘Exactly’: ‘Tremendous’ Tottenham player hints Antonio Conte could be about to hand him first start of the season soon
The ‘tremendous’ Doherty has fallen down the pecking order slightly at Spurs after picking up a knee injury last season.
The 30-year-old enjoyed a brilliant spell under Conte before a crunching tackle by Matty Cash sidelined him for the remainder of last season.
And Doherty hasn’t started a game for Spurs this season. But he has hinted that this could change after the international break.
Doherty hints Conte could hand him first start
Speaking in a press conference while away on international duty with the Republic of Ireland, Doherty said Conte wants him to build his match fitness over the next week.
“That’s exactly what Antonio said – he wants me to come away and try and get two games in,” Doherty told the Irish Mirror.
“He kind of said in his press conference that I would be available after the international break fully for selection.
“That’s kind of the plan – if Stephen [Kenny] obeys him!”
The Irish team face two Nations League matches over the next five days and Doherty will be hoping to get some valuable minutes.
Despite his lack of playing time this season, Doherty insists that he is not worried about his place in Conte’s side.
He added: “I’m not frustrated. I understand where the manager is coming from where he thought my fitness was and he was right at the end of the day.
“I know that he trusts me, I know that once I’m back again, he knows what I can do for him.
“Once he thinks I’m available, I’m sure he’ll give me more time.”
Spurs face a tough test after the international break as they travel to the Emirates to play bitter rivals Arsenal.
Emerson Royal has been favoured over Doherty so far this season. But the former Wolves man will be hoping he can put in good displays for Ireland and force his way back into Conte’s side.
