Report: Everton will now open contract talks with third player as well as Gordon and Pickford
Everton are hoping to tie down Alex Iwobi to a new contract, with the club set to ramp up their discussions with the midfielder in the coming weeks.
Iwobi has become an integral player for Frank Lampard this season and has been playing in a more central midfield role to good effect so far. The former Arsenal man was predominantly used as a wide forward for much of his career up this season, but Lampard’s change has helped him.
And according to The Athletic, Everton are now looking to open new contract talks with Iwobi. Alongside Anthony Gordon and Jordan Pickford, it’s claimed the Toffees are keen to tie Iwobi down to fresh terms, with his current deal set to expire in 2024.
Certainly, Iwobi’s improvement under Lampard warrants reward. He’s been a key component so far this term and Lampard is clearly a big fan of the ex-Arsenal man.
TBR’s View: Iwobi Now VItal For Everton
Iwobi seems to have gone from expensive flop to key player overnight and the change from Lampard has to be praised.
Of course, it is down to Iwobi to deliver the performances he has been doing and there is certainly praise to be given to him as well. He’s buckled down, took advice on board, and clearly looks a better player than he ever has.
For Everton, getting their main men tied down to new contracts is just as important as adding new faces. If they can keep Pickford, Gordon and Iwobi, then it gives Lampard solid foundations on which to build his team around.
