Everton to offer Ellis Simms new contract after sensational Blackpool loan
According to the Liverpool Echo, Everton are looking to offer Ellis Simms a new contract after his sensational Blackpool loan.
Simms will enter the final year of his current deal next month, but the Toffees are keen to secure him. The club will offer the striker a new contract before discussing his immediate future.
Everton are open to sending Simms out on loan again next season after impressing at Blackpool as they secured promotion. The 21-year-old scored eight goals in 21 League One games before netting twice in the play-off semi-finals against Oxford United.
Simms was unable to feature for Neil Critchley’s Seasiders at Wembley after suffering a groin injury in training. He developed the issue while taking penalties towards the end of the last season before the final with Lincoln City.
Blackpool won promotion to the Championship with a 2-1 victory over the Imps. But they had to come from behind, while Simms could only offer his support from the sidelines.
Carlo Ancelotti was set to decide Simms’ immediate Everton future in pre-season before accepting the Real Madrid job (The Athletic). The Toffees product has interest from several Championship clubs over a loan deal for next season should he be available.
TBR’s view: Everton must seal Simms contract
Everton must put an enticing offer on the table for Simms when negotiations are held to convince him to stay. The youngster will know clubs will want his services after flourishing in his first spell away from Goodison Park.
The Toffees knew what Simms is capable of from his time in their U23s, netting 17 goals in 36 games. But he had to take that to the senior stage and has certainly lived up to the hype. The Oldham-born prospect also learned a lot from working under Critchley and earned a lot of praise from Brett Ormerod.
The former Blackpool and Southampton forward told The Athletic: “He’s got a bit of everything: he’s a big lad but he’s mobile; he’ll come short or run in behind; he has strength. He’ll have learned a lot under Critchley, who is a great manager. He’s been fantastic for Blackpool and Blackpool have been fantastic for him.
“He’s made massive strides, scoring some fantastic goals. If he keeps his head down, then who knows. You improve through experience. He’s got everything in the locker that you need as a forward.”
Simms has earned his new contract and will be expected to take to the Championship with great success next season. The Premier League may be a stretch too far just yet, but he is on the right path towards Everton’s first-team.
