Europa League club want £100k-a-week Tottenham player as soon as Spurs bring in replacement

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly closing in on the signing of Romania international defender Radu Dragusin from Italian outfit Genoa.

Once Spurs get the signing of the 21-year-old over the line, they could also have the chance to immediately offload one of their surplus players.

According to Calciomercato, Italian outfit Roma are waiting in the wings to potentially reunite Tottenham defender Eric Dier with Jose Mourinho.

Dier has been surplus to Ange Postecoglou’s requirements this season and looks a prime candidate to depart Spurs this month.

Even with the likes of Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero out, the £100,000-a-week centre-back has just 199 minutes under his belt.

Meanwhile, Roma are in urgent need of a new defender and, with a deal for Leonardo Bonucci being held up and Evan Ndicka going to the Africa Cup of Nations, they’re looking for alternatives.

However, Director of Football Tiago Pinto only has €2million (just over £1.7million) to spend between fees and the player’s salary unless someone leaves the squad.

With that in mind, Dier – whose Tottenham contract expires in the summer – could be a cheap option for Roma, who Mourinho also happens to know well.

The Giallorossi currently waiting to see what happens first with Tottenham’s move for Dragusin before making their move.

However, it is expected that the Genoa man’s arrival will ‘pave the way’ for Dier to leave N17 and potentially reunite with Mourinho.

Dier has been a good servant for Tottenham since his £4million move in 2014, but with so little game time under his belt at present, he needs a move to play regularly.

Roma would be a good shout for the 29-year-old. They’re in the Europa League and remain in contention for a top-four finish in Serie A.

At the same time, Tottenham may well opt to keep Dier at N17 until the summer for the sake of strength in depth.

Also, there could be other suitors willing to pay more than Roma for the Spurs man. West Ham are apparently in pursuit too.
