Chelsea were interested in signing Florian Wirtz before Liverpool became the favourites for his signature.
The German was expected to be one of the biggest names in this summer’s transfer window, and that has turned out to be the case.
TBR Football confirmed that Liverpool will sign Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in the coming days, and the midfielder is expected to undergo his medical soon.
Chelsea, who were once described as the ‘front runners’ for Wirtz, didn’t actively pursue a move to sign him this summer.
Arsenal star Ethan Nwaneri may have just suggested why.
Ethan Nwaneri thinks Chelsea star Cole Palmer is better than Liverpool-bound Florian Wirtz
Florian Wirtz is one of the best attacking midfielders in Europe.
The German has been incredible for Bayer Leverkusen over the last two seasons, and his performances have convinced Liverpool to smash their transfer record to land him.
Looking at the price the Reds are paying for Wirtz, many Chelsea fans will be delighted that they got Cole Palmer for just £40 million.
The England international has been the Blues’ best player over the last two seasons, and Arsenal wonderkid Nwaneri appears to be a fan of him.
In a game of Winner Stays On on FanCode, the teenager was asked to pick between incoming Liverpool star Wirtz and Chelsea’s Palmer.
“Cole Palmer,” he replied without any hesitation.
Nwaneri also chose Palmer over Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes.

Cole Palmer vs Florian Wirtz stats compared in the last two seasons
Both Palmer and Wirtz are top-class players in the attacking midfield role.
Chelsea fans have enjoyed the brilliance of the Englishman over the last two seasons, while Liverpool supporters will be hoping that Wirtz can have an even bigger impact at Anfield.
But, whose numbers over the last two seasons have been better?
| Games | Goals | Assists | Minutes per goal or assist | |
| Cole Palmer in 2023/24 and 2024/25 | 95 | 42 | 27 | 108.8 |
| Florian Wirtz in 2023/24 and 2024/25 | 90 | 34 | 35 | 99.52 |
Both Palmer and Wirtz have directly contributed to 69 goals in the last two seasons, but the Liverpool-bound attacker has done it in five fewer games.
To add to that, 13 of Palmer’s 42 goals have come from the penalty spot, while just five of Wirtz’s strikes have come in the same way.
But, Palmer has been doing it in the toughest league in the world and at a club that hasn’t been performing at their best over the last two seasons.
That is perhaps two of the reasons why Nwaneri prefers the Chelsea star over Wirtz right now.
