Erling Haaland has now done something that has utterly overshadowed Man United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy

Not only did Manchester City striker Erling Haaland humiliate Manchester United on the pitch last week, but he has now also overshadowed one of their legends’ records.

Ruud van Nistelrooy was sensational for Manchester United just over two decades ago, with him and Arsenal’s Thierry Henry head and shoulders above the rest of the Premier League.

Van Nistelrooy bagged 150 goals and 28 assists from 219 Man United appearances, despite his penultimate season at Old Trafford being impacted by injury.

Fast-forward 20 years and Erling Haaland is the Premier League’s star striker, but it’s not as though he is impressing just in England – he is also flying on the European stage.

Erling Haaland demolishes Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Champions League scoring record

On Thursday night, Manchester City got their Champions League campaign under way with a home meeting against Kevin De Bruyne’s Napoli.

And though De Bruyne had to come off early for tactical reasons, there was still plenty for City fans to celebrate, not least Haaland breaking another record.

Haaland opened the scoring against Napoli to reach a half-century of Champions League goals, also becoming the player to do so in the fewest number of games.

The Norwegian has reached the milestone in just 49 appearances, a staggering 13 games fewer than the previous record holder – Van Nistelrooy.

What Erling Haaland is doing this season that he never did before

At just 25 years of age, Haaland has done more than enough to earn his place in the City Hall of Fame.

However, it looks as though there is much to come from Haaland, including the possibility of becoming club captain in the coming years.

The Norway international recently told Sky Sports that, with so many key players having left this year, he has now stepped up in helping the new recruits out.

Haaland then delivered a brutally honest assessment about City’s current situation which suggests he is definitely captain material.

“We need to understand that the past is the past,” said Haaland. “We’re not the same team any more, and we have to use it in a positive way.

“We have other qualities now than we had. And we have to adapt but we also have to perform. That’s in the end the most important thing.

“Say what you want, but we have to win games in the end. That’s what we need. That’s what we get paid for.”
