England vs Croatia: Rio Ferdinand makes Kalvin Phillips claim
Rio Ferdinand has told his YouTube channel that everything Kalvin Phillips did in England vs Croatia was first-class, as he suggested that the Leeds United star was his man of the match.
Phillips stole many of the headlines as the Three Lions kicked off their Euro 2020 campaign with a victory.
The 25-year-old set up the only goal, playing in Raheem Sterling during the second-half at Wembley.
He had already staked a strong claim for being the best player on the pitch before that stage. The Leeds man was superb during the first-half, testing the goalkeeper with a volley.
And Ferdinand has now made a claim after being asked about Raheem Sterling winning the official man of the match award.
“I think Phillips was the standout,” he told his YouTube channel. “Phillips, he did all that was asked of him. He got the assist, he was the one who was breaking as well at times from midfield.
“He detached himself from midfield to go and press at times. The timing of it was great, his energy. Everything about his performance yesterday, I thought, was first-class.”
Phillips lays down marker in England vs Croatia clash
Phillips seemed to have a point to prove heading into the game. While Leeds fans have long been convinced about his ability, some rival supporters have arguably been quite harsh in their assessments of the midfielder.
A look on social media when the lineup was announced would suggest that some had their doubts about starting Phillips at Wembley.
But he silenced those doubters emphatically. And heading into the rest of the group-stages, he is the player that so many are now raving about.
