'Endless energy', 'incredible mentality': Edu and Arteta hail Arsenal player who's loved by everyone

Arsenal have just announced that Mohamed Elneny has extended his contract at the club, and Edu and Mikel Arteta have hailed the Egyptian midfielder.

Elneny joined Arsenal from Basel in January 2016, when Arsene Wenger was still at the helm. He has had his ups and downs, and there have been plenty of occasions when it looked like he was on his way out of the Emirates.

It really did look like Elneny would leave Arsenal this summer when his contract expired. However, his performances in the middle of the park after Thomas Partey’s injury have been nothing short of magnificent, and that completely changed Arteta’s mind about his future.

Elneny has now signed a one-year extension with an option of another, and Edu and Arteta are delighted to have him.

Following the announcement of Elneny’s new deal, Arteta told Arsenal.com: “Mo is a really important part of the team. He brings endless energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the team and is loved by everyone.

“He’s an important player for us on and off the pitch, a real role model to our younger players and I’m delighted he’s staying.”

Arsenal technical director Edu added: “Mo has an incredible mentality which is so important for our squad.

“He helps the team as much as he can every day. We are all very happy to have him with us as we look to build on what has been achieved this season.”

TBR View:

Elneny is definitely not the first player that comes to your mind when you think about Arsenal, but he’s certainly one of the most reliable ones when he’s called upon.

The Egyptian does not possess the qualities that Partey does, but as a midfielder whose job is to shield the defence and help out in transition, Elneny is excellent.

Arsenal will be back in the Europa League next season and the Gunners will need more players. Elneny is unlikely to play regularly in the Premier League next term, but he will likely be a guaranteed starter in Europe and in the cup competitions.

It’s clear that Arteta loves him and so do all the other players in the squad.
