According to a report from Turkish outlet Milliyet, there’s a big regret at Galatasaray about not being able to sign Arsenal star Mohamed Elneny in the January transfer window.

The Egyptian has been an Arsenal player since January 2016. He has never quite established himself as a regular starter, but he has always done a decent job when called upon at the Emirates.

Elneny entered the final year of his contract last summer and there was a feeling that Mikel Arteta would sell him. He stayed put then, but barely played in the first half of the season.

There were rumours floating around in January as well about a potential departure, but Elneny stayed again – even though a transfer was all but agreed this time around.

Ahead of the January transfer window this year, then-Galatasaray boss Fatih Terim had made it clear to the board that he wanted three players signed – Trezeguet, Gedson Fernandes and Arsenal’s Elneny.

The report claims that agreements with all three players and their clubs were also reached and it was only a matter of time before the moves could’ve been completed.

However, just 10 days into the window, Terim was sacked and Domenec Torrent replaced him. The new Gala boss just didn’t fancy Elneny and co, and thus, the deals broke down.

Now, the report claims that Galatasaray have a ‘big regret’ that they couldn’t complete a deal for the Arsenal man.

Since Thomas Partey’s injury, Galatasaray-linked Elneny has become an integral part of Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal. The Egyptian has been fantastic for the Gunners in recent weeks and he played a big part in helping them beat Chelsea, Manchester United and West Ham in consecutive games.

Elneny, who will turn 30 in July, will be out of contract this summer. Following his recent performances, many fans and pundits have urged Arsenal to give him a new deal, including club legend Ian Wright.

The legendary Englishman said recently, as quoted by TBR Football: “We are talking about players who came on who do a job for their manager with unbelievable professionalism.

“Elneny may be leaving at the end of the season, you look at that performance and the one against Chelsea, and you can only think to yourself that if Arsenal are trying to build a team to get to the top four, you need that back-up player. He has to stay!”
