Emile Heskey says Leeds United-linked Ivan Toney is similar to Harry Kane

Leeds United were heavily linked with a move to sign Ivan Toney in the summer, and Emile Heskey has just compared him to Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane.

Gareth Southgate announced his England squad yesterday for their upcoming games against Italy and Germany. None of Jesse Marsch’s men made the cut, but Toney, who could well have been a Leeds player now, received his first-ever call-up.

Toney has been linked with a whole host of clubs, but no side more than Leeds United were rumoured to be interested in him in the final few weeks of the transfer window.

Reports revealed last month that the Whites were keen to sign the Englishman, and Marsch apparently believed he’d be a great fit alongside Patrick Bamford at Elland Road. However, once it was reported that Brentford wanted £50 million for him, it became clear that Leeds would not pursue a move.

Now, following his England call-up, Toney’s value could go up even more, and Heskey has just added to all the hype by claiming he’s very similar to Kane.

He said on talkSPORT: “He’s a very, very confident lad, you can see that when he plays.

“(He’s) similar, we were speaking about the two with one of the lads who’s a Brentford fan, similar to the way Kane plays, the way he drops in and links up and then drives and gets into the box as well.”

TBR View:

That is a big, big claim by Heskey, but you can see what he’s talking about.

Toney, branded as ‘stunning’ by Paul Merson, is arguably a lot more physical than Kane but doesn’t quite have the vision and passing range that the Tottenham man possesses.

However, you can see a few similarities between the way both strikers play.

That’s probably one of the reasons why Southgate has called him up to the England squad ahead of the World Cup, as there’s nobody else quite like Kane.

It will be interesting to see how Toney will fare if he gets a chance next week. If he does well, you can expect plenty of clubs to line up for his signature in the next two windows.
