Emi Martinez's agent says he wants to play in Champions League

The agent of Emi Martinez has told Tuttomercatoweb that his goal is to be playing in the Champions League – amid reports that Tottenham Hotspur now want the Aston Villa goalkeeper.

Martinez was one of Argentina’s main heroes in Sunday’s final. He had been superb throughout the tournament. But he saved some brilliance for the showdown with France.

Martinez made an unbelievable save from Randal Kolo Muani in the final moments of extra-time. He had no right to get his left boot to the thunderous shot.

And he subsequently managed to save one penalty as Argentina went on to win the shootout. Unsurprisingly, he was named as the best goalkeeper at the tournament.

Certainly, if Tottenham do want Martinez, you would imagine that the goalkeeper would have moved higher up the wishlist throughout the tournament.

Journalist Dean Jones told Give Me Sport earlier this month that Spurs have Martinez on their radar. Of course, that would be a controversial move given that he spent so long at Arsenal earlier in his career.

But perhaps there is a good chance that Martinez would be up for a switch to Spurs. His agent, Gustavo Goni was asked whether he could possibly see his client playing in Serie A in the future. And he suggested that playing in Europe’s premier competition is his priority.

“Today there are few teams that can afford a goalkeeper like him. But Serie A, well, why not? Clearly he is aiming high, to the Champions League,” he told Tuttomercatoweb.

Tottenham are currently in the Champions League. And they will have their sights set on finishing inside the top-four in the Premier League again this season.

Aston Villa have the means to perform a lot better. And Unai Emery is likely to lead them up the table following his appointment. But they are a long way off challenging for a spot in the top-four.

And given that Martinez is now 30, he may not be prepared to wait around – particularly if Champions League clubs are keen.
