Tottenham now interested in signing £17m star who Lionel Messi has hailed as ‘one of the best in the world’ - journalist
Tottenham will seemingly be targeting a successor to Hugo Lloris over the next two years as the Frenchman approaches the end of his career.
Lloris has been ever present between the sticks for Spurs since he completed a £12 million switch from Lyon back in 2013. He’s racked up a staggering 437 appearances for the north Londoners and has been their skipper since 2015.
The 35-year-old has just booked his place in the World Cup final with France too, just four years after lifting the trophy. Although he will get the chance to become a world champion for a second time on Sunday, it seems Tottenham are eyeing a future replacement.
Spurs interested in Martinez
Jones has told GiveMeSport that Spurs are eyeing a possible move for Jordan Pickford, while they will also see if Martinez will consider a switch next summer.
“A very interesting position at Spurs going forward. I do think they’re keeping an eye on the Pickford situation,” Jones said.
“I’m pretty sure they’re also looking at Emi Martinez and whether he might consider a move at the end of the season.”
Martinez has been brilliant for Aston Villa after making the £17 million switch from Spurs’ bitter rivals Arsenal in 2020 (Sky Sports).
The 30-year-old enjoyed a decent spell between the sticks in north London but has really cemented his place as one of the league’s most reliable shot stoppers at Villa.
He’s also closing in on World Cup glory with Argentina after they beat Croatia 3-0 to book their place in Sunday’s final. Martinez produced an heroic display in the quarter-final as La Albiceleste overcame the Netherlands on penalties.
His eye-catching displays for Argentina have led to Messi labelling him as one of the world’s best in his position.
“Dibu [Emiliano] Martinez is fundamental.” Messi told TNT Sports after Argentina beat Uruguay 3-0 during World Cup qualifying last year.
“When they come to him, he always responds. He established himself in goal and we have one of the best goalkeepers in the world.” as transcribed by TalkSPORT.
Despite his links to Spurs’ arch rivals, Martinez would be a good addition for Antonio Conte’s men once Lloris moves on.
Tottenham certainly need to start lining up replacements for their captain as he is now in the twilight of his career.
But while Martinez is arguably better with the ball at his feets than Lloris, he doesn’t represent a significant upgrade in that department. Conte may be better suited going for the likes of Pickford, who boasts brilliant distribution from the back.
