Tottenham Hotspur defender Emerson Royal has come out and claimed how Antonio Conte makes him get ‘mad’ in training at times.

The Brazilian joined Spurs from Barcelona for £25.8 million last year (BBC). He was viewed by many as a fantastic signing, but he really struggled in his debut season in the Premier League.

Following Conte’s arrival in November, Emerson, like most of his teammates, improved, and one of the biggest reasons behind that progress is the work they were made to do behind the scenes by their manager.

Emerson has now shared what it’s like to work under Conte, and the Brazilian admitted that the Spurs boss makes him angry sometimes.

In an interview with ESPN Brasil, Emerson said, as quoted by the Evening Standard: “There are some physical training, sometimes we do a strong training, it ends, and I finish the training dead.

“I arrive at training the next day, and he’s [Conte] like, ‘Emerson, I didn’t like your training yesterday.’ It’s not possible, then I start to get mad already. ‘How did you not like my training yesterday? I gave (my) life, finished training dead’.

“But then, I’ll check the GPS, I’m fine, better than many, among the best. Then I’ll say, ‘look at my GPS’.

“(Conte says) ‘No, but you can do a lot more’. Then I finish training frustrated. He says, ‘you see, that’s how you have to train’.

“We do the physicals, and he just keeps shouting my name. But that’s good. It shows that he wants to help me.”

It is no surprise to hear that Conte makes his players work their socks off in training. It’s also not a shock to learn that he pushes his players to their absolute limits to get the best out of them.

That’s what makes Conte a serial winner and one of the best managers in the world, and that’s also why Tottenham managed to qualify for the Champions League in a campaign in which they looked destined to miss out.

The new season is a little over a month away and Conte will have his lads back for pre-season this week. We expect the Italian to do the same thing that he has always done – push his players as far as they can go to get them ready for what will be a really difficult campaign.

Emerson may get mad at Conte at times, but it’s good to see he realises that the Tottenham boss only wants to help him become a better player.
