Tottenham Hotspur star Emerson Royal has been linked with a move away from North London this summer, and the Brazilian’s father, who also happens to be his agent, has broken his silence.

Spurs splashed around £25 million to sign the right-back from Barcelona last summer (BBC). He was expected to be a real star in the Premier League, but after a very difficult campaign – first under Nuno Espirito Santo and then with Antonio Conte at the helm – his time in England may be up.

Multiple reports over the last few weeks have led us to believe that Conte wants Emerson gone this summer. It has even been claimed that La Liga giants Atletico Madrid are keen to sign him.

Now, the defender’s father has addressed all the rumours surrounding his son.

Emerson Royal’s father says he has had informal talks with Atletico Madrid

Emerson’s dad was not too pleased with the rumours surrounding his son’s future.

He revealed to Mundo Deprtivo that he has held informal discussions with Atletico Madrid, but hinted that it may not be regarding the Tottenham man at all.

He said: “I had an informal conversation with Atlético de Madrid, but I am not only Emerson Royal’s agent, I have other players, so I cannot confirm this information released in the press.

“Our intermediary with the press is the Portuguese journalist and neuroscientist Fabiano de Abreu Agrela. He is not only responsible for Emerson’s information but also deals with mental and high-performance issues.

“He even revealed to me that this type of rumor is not good for the moment since the player is very happy at Tottenham and is having a good moment in his career, which will improve even more.”

We don’t doubt that Emerson is happy at Tottenham Hotspur, but whether Conte is content with him at right-wing-back is the big question here.

If recent reports are to be believed, Spurs are ready to let him go this summer, and Conte already has a replacement in mind – Middlesbrough’s highly-rated right-back Djed Spence.

It really does look like Emerson is surplus to requirements at Tottenham, and if Atletico Madrid are interested in signing him, the Brazilian should consider joining forces with Diego Simeone in the coming weeks.

The Argentine is one of the best managers in the world, and under him, Emerson will develop tremendously. Just like at Spurs, he will play Champions League football in Madrid, which makes this a no-brainer for the Brazilian if he has no place at Spurs next season.
