Elneny shines for Arsenal in surprise statistic

A surprise statistic places one Arsenal player as the second-best performer in the Premier League when it comes to completing long passes this season.

A look on social media would suggest that many Gunners fans do not deem Mohamed Elneny to be most progressive when he is in possession.

The Egyptian – who cost £7.4 million, according to the Guardian – has improved as the campaign has gone on. And it does appear that most supporters would be content with the 28-year-old staying at the Emirates beyond this summer.

In an ideal world, he would not be a regular starter for Mikel Arteta’s men. But he is clearly a player Arteta appreciates having amongst the ranks.

The Spaniard labelled Elneny ‘special’ back in November. And there have since been reports that he may be offered a new contract at the Emirates.

And perhaps there is one surprise statistic that hints that Elneny has not quite got all of the credit he deserves.

Surprise statistic puts Arsenal star amongst Premier League’s best

Interestingly, Elneny is the Premier League’s second-best long-passer, according to FB Ref.

Remarkably, Elneny has completed 136 of the 157 long passes he has attempted.

With a pass-completion rate of 86.6 percent, he is only behind Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum for successful balls over 30 yards in the top flight this past season.

That leaves him just ahead of the likes of Rodri, John Stones and Ruben Dias.

Elneny may have role to play at Arsenal next season

Elneny’s critics may flippantly suggest that a large number of those passes travelled backwards. But he did seem to become more ambitious as the season went on.

Of course, there are more important factors that will determine what role Elneny plays next season.

Opinion amongst Arsenal fans was recently divided when his agent suggested that there were talks over a new contract.

And it is surely fair to say that it would be an underwhelming sign if Elneny is named in the starting lineup on the opening day of next season.

But that particular statistic about his passing highlights that he does have that ability to bring some real quality to the side.

As a squad player therefore, he may be a fantastic option for Arteta to have beyond this season.
