Michael Edwards is one of many reported candidates that could be installed as director of football at Newcastle – and Eddie Howe has responded.

Howe, 43, was giving his first press conference as Newcastle manager. The new Toon boss has signed a contract, keeping him on Tyneside until 2024.

It comes after a deeply impressive start. Firstly, Howe was spotted arriving at Newcastle at 6.55AM in the morning – starting earlier than Steve Bruce.

He took training, with impressive clips posted on social media and YouTube – gaining plenty of praise for his detailed and demanding approach.

Reversing to meet fans late at night, Howe also spoke well in his first presser and interview. But a director of football is yet to join him.

Howe confirmed his Bournemouth team will be joining him, alongside Graeme Jones. He was asked about Liverpool chief Edwards in the presser.

“As far as I know, absolutely not, Howe said in Wednesday’s press conference, as per the Chronicle. I know nothing about Edwards’ future.”

Howe on Edwards: Liverpool man is best available option for Newcastle

Howe worked together with Edwards at Portsmouth soon after the turn of the century. They met last Wednesday, when Liverpool took on Atletico.

Newcastle need a director of football. Jason Wilcox has been linked, while ex-Chelsea transfer supremo Michael Emenalo has been the subject of talks.

But Edwards is expected to leave Liverpool soon – with his contract ending in 2022. There have been suggestions, as per the Echo, he could move north.

His work at Liverpool certainly makes him the best option. It is not just his signings, but his value for money when selling. He would certainly be ideal.
