'Don't worry': BBC journalist makes intriguing Leeds takeover claim during radio show last night

Leeds will get taken over by the San Fransisco 49ers if they remain in the Premier League, according to journalist Rory Smith.

The Whites are fighting for their Premier League lives, but are currently outside the relegation zone after Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Brighton.

If Burnley do not get another point, they will be safe, and in any case, the relegation battle will go down to the very last day of the season.

Journalist Smith was on the BBC’s Monday Night Club and spoke about the future of the club.

It was reported in December that the 49ers have an option to purchase Leeds for a fee of around £400m, as long as it’s done before 2024.

At the moment, the Americans own just over 40% of the club.

Leeds will get taken over, suggests Smith

“I worry to some extent if they stay up because I think what has become clear is that there is a major overhaul of that squad is needed,” he said.

“But I don’t worry, because I think they might get bought out by the San Fransisco 49ers.”

There is an American influence on the club in the dugout and in the boardroom, but all that matters for Leeds is that this time next week they are a Premier League team.

The longer term planning can wait, they just need to make sure they have the best possible springboard to go into next season.

If they drop, top players will leave and would the takeover happen then? Who knows? Relegation danger creates so much uncertainty, and Leeds need to do their job at Brentford then hope it is enough.
