Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu has revealed that he snubbed Tottenham Hotspur to join Arsenal on transfer deadline day.
The Japanese full-back has been brilliant for the Gunners since joining them from Bologna. He has played a key part in helping Mikel Arteta turn things around at the Emirates and Arsenal fans absolutely love him.
Before Arsenal made a move for Tomiyasu, the 23-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Tottenham. A deal even looked imminent at one point, but if the versatile defender’s words are anything to go by, he turned them down.
Here’s what he said about what happened in the summer transfer window.
Tomiyasu: I rejected Tottenham to join Arsenal
The Arsenal new boy told DAZN Japan: “I thought I wasn’t able to join Arsenal. I thought I was going to Spurs.
“On deadline day I rejected them. Arsenal asked me to join and I did immediately.”
Arsenal completed Tomiyasu’s signing for £16 million on the final day of the transfer window. There was no sign of any interest from the Gunners until that morning, but Edu quickly jumped in and got the deal over the line.
Spurs, who were also keen at one point, decided to go with Emerson Royal instead. The Brazilian is a very good defender in his own right and there’s a decent chance he’ll thrive under a manager like Antonio Conte.

Tottenham fans react
Tomiyasu’s comments about rejecting Spurs has not gone down well among Tottenham fans. Many believe that it was Fabio Paratici who rejected the Japanese international in favour of Emerson, not the other way around.
Here’s how a few of them reacted to Tomiyasu’s comments on Twitter:
