Director suggests Arsenal could recall Marcelo Flores from loan

Arsenal sent out young Marcelo Flores on loan for the season to Real Oviedo in the summer, but that deal could be cut short now as things haven’t gone to plan.

The 19-year-old Mexico international is one of Arsenal’s most talented young players. There was a lot of excitement when he was sent out on loan to Spain to get some experience under his belt, but that move just hasn’t worked out.

Arsenal could recall Marcelo Flores from loan

Flores has been on Arsenal’s books since he joined the club from Ipswich Town back in March 2019. He played 42 times for the Gunners’ U18s and U21s, scoring 16 goals and providing six assists.

The young Mexican is a phenomenal talent. Branded as ‘incredible’, everyone who follows Arsenal’s youth setup has high hopes for him, and this loan spell was meant to accelerate his journey to the first team.

However, Flores just hasn’t played enough.

Since joining Oviedo in the summer, the 19-year-old has played just over 600 minutes of football. He has only started six games in La Liga 2 and has been an unused substitute on 10 occasions.

The Spanish outfit’s Sporting Director, Roberto Suarez, has come out and claimed that his side are happy with Flores and are willing to keep him at the club until the end of his loan deal.

However, he then claimed that it’s up to Arsenal to assess if the situation Flores has been in is good enough, after reports from El Desmarque and Soy Fiera previously suggested he could look for a change in the winter window.

Suarez said, as quoted by COPE: “There are players who have raised their situation and we have explained our feelings to them. He has had to admit it.

“Marcelo Flores? The coach is happy, but Arsenal also has to assess whether the situation he lives in is good for him and for the club. Once closed, we’ll see what happens to it.”

Arsenal have been really smart with their loans over the last few years.

Emile Smith Rowe’s spell at Huddersfield Town helped him become the player he is today, while we all know the impact William Saliba’s loans, especially the one at Marseille, have had on his career.

The Gunners have already made some changes with their loaned-out youngsters this month – Brooke Norton-Cuffy, Miguel Azeez and Arthur Okonkwo were all recalled and sent out to different clubs for the remainder of the season.

Flores needs to be playing regularly, so it won’t surprise us at all if Arsenal bring him back and find a club where he will play week in, week out, until the end of this season.
