Real Oviedo president raves about Arsenal youngster Marcelo Flores

Arsenal youngster Marcelo Flores joined Real Oviedo on loan last summer, and the Spanish club’s president, Martin Pelaez, has heaped praise on him.

The 19-year-old has been at Arsenal since joining them from Ipswich back in 2019. He is viewed as a fine talent, and many at the club are convinced he has a bright future in the game.

His loan club’s president, Pelaez, agrees as well.

Real Oviedo president raves about Arsenal youngster Marcelo Flores

The whole point of Flores’ loan move in the summer was for him to play regular football. Unfortunately for him, that hasn’t happened.

The teenager has started just seven games in all competitions since he joined Real Oviedo. That’s not enough at all, which is why there has been a lot of speculation about the future of his loan deal.

A report from Mexico revealed last week that he could leave the club and join Club León on loan for the second half of the season. The Mexican outfit is owned by the same group that calls the shots at Real Oviedo.

However, president Pelaez has downplayed that by heaping praise on Flores.

He said, as quoted by AS Mexico: “I can tell you that Marcelo is a Real Oviedo player. We are very happy with Marcelo; I can’t give you an opinion on a destination that you say is something that is on the radar or is done.

“Marcelo is a player with a lot of potential, he’s 19 years old, I see him as having the quality to continue in Europe. He has a lot of room for improvement, he has a great future, he is extremely professional, with an incredible mentality, he has all the conditions to continue in Europe.

“We hope he continues to grow, he has talent, youth, professionalism, he has a great future with us. We have the derby, we have a Copa del Rey game, and once these two games are over, we will evaluate the whole squad and see what the possible signings and departures are.”

TBR View:

Flores is a phenomenal young player who has the potential to reach the very top.

The 19-year-old, who is yet to play for the senior side, scored 11 goals and provided three assists for Arsenal’s youth team last season. He played as a number 10 and also on the left flank, and he was really, really good.

It made no sense for Arsenal to keep him with the youth side in the summer – he was just too good for that level. A loan move made a lot of sense, and Real Oviedo snapped him up.

Sadly, things haven’t gone to plan, and it will be interesting to see if Arsenal will make some changes for the second half of the season.
