Diogo Jota and Jamie Carragher were seriously impressed with 23-year-old Liverpool player yesterday

Although topping their Champions League group was always going to be unlikely, Liverpool needed a good performance last night.

Jurgen Klopp will be satisfied with yesterday’s result, as they defeated Napoli 2-0 at Anfield.

It was a tight game against a Napoli side who previously had a 100% winning record in their group.

However, Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez’s tap-ins delivered an important victory for Liverpool.

Although the result was inconsequential in the Champions League, Liverpool needed to bounce back from the weekend’s defeat to Leeds.

Klopp made several changes to his starting line-up from the weekend, and one player in particular was warmly welcomed back.

Ibrahima Konate returned to the back line in place of Joe Gomez.

Gomez was at fault for Leeds’ first goal, and Jamie Carragher was scathing of his performance.

However, Carragher and Diogo Jota were both very impressed with Konate last night.

The 23-year-old slotted in alongside Virgil Van Dijk, and had the difficult job of doubling up with Trent Alexander-Arnold to stop Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

The Georgian was a menace all game, but Liverpool came away with a valuable clean sheet.

Konate took to Instagram after the match to celebrate Liverpool’s win.

He’s posted two pictures of him action with the caption, “Back in business”.

Jota commented on his post, comparing Konate to a brick wall, while Carragher hailed his performance.

It was Konate’s third appearance of the season, having struggled for much of the season with a knee injury.

He briefly returned against Liverpool, before picking up a knock ahead of their win against Manchester City.

With Joel Matip still unavailable, Konate is likely to be Van Dijk’s centre-back partner in the lead up to the World Cup.

He nearly gave away a clumsy penalty for a challenge on Kvaratskhelia, but got away with it.

Jota and Carragher were both clearly impressed with Konate’s performance overall.

He’ll be looking to carry that form into Liverpool’s match against Tottenham on Sunday.
