‘Different class’: Jermaine Jenas raves about 23-year-old Tottenham want to sign during the World Cup final today

Jermaine Jenas raved about reported Tottenham Hotspur target Alexis Mac Allister during the BBC’s coverage of the World Cup final today.

Mac Allister has emerged as a possible target for Antonio Conte after the Brighton midfielder has put in some brilliant performances in Qatar.

The 23-year-old lifted the World Cup today, alongside Tottenham star Cristian Romero, after an eventful World Cup final win on penalties against France.

Much of the focus has been on Lionel Messi’s outstanding displays and his bid to lift his first World Cup. But his teammates have been pivotal in helping him become a world champion at last, including Mac Allister.

Lionel Scaloni’s men faced off against France in the final today and came flying out the blocks. Messi opened the scoring from the penalty spot midway through the first-half after Ousmane Dembele brought down Angel Di Maria.

Argentina’s second goal was a superb team move, with Mac Allister providing the assist for Di Maria. But Jenas waxed lyrical about the Brighton man’s World Cup displays before he created the second goal.

Jenas raves about Mac Allister

BBC commentator Guy Mowbray praised Mac Allister for his displays for Argentina and said he has been ‘magnificent’ in every game.

This prompted Jenas to praise the 23-year-old’s display in the opening half an hour of today’s final.

“You’re right, Guy. Mac Allister – good tournament. [He’s] been top drawer in this midfield. Looks really settled,” Jenas said while co-commentating on BBC One

Mac Allister played a pivotal role in Argentina’s second goal as he linked up brilliantly with Messi in the middle of the park.

The Brighton star received the ball in midfield before knocking it to Messi, who flicked the ball to Julian Alvarez. Mac Allister then continued his run down the right-hand side and played a perfectly-weighted ball across the box to Angel Di Maria, who finished expertly to beat Hugo Lloris.

Scaloni’s men continued to cause France problems in the second-half and were by far the better side for 70 minutes. But a Kylian Mbappe brace forced extra-time as Argentina were pegged back from being two goals ahead for the second time in the tournament.

Messi thought he had scored a dramatic winner in the second-half of extra-time but Mbappe cancelled his effort out with his second effort from the spot.

Mac Allister has been a standout performer in Qatar after being left out of Scaloni’s starting line-up for their first game of the tournament. He was eventually taken off by Scaloni with just five minutes left during extra-time and Jenas said: “He’s been different class.”

The midfielder managed to score one goal and provide as many assists in five appearances from the middle of the park in the World Cup.

His performances have led to recent reports from L’Interista claiming that Spurs hold an interest in signing the World Cup star. But Conte’s men aren’t the only side that have been impressed by Mac Allister’s displays, with Inter Milan, Juventus and Atletico Madrid also said to be admirers.

Spurs are certainly in need of a midfielder like Mac Allister as they lack creativity in the middle of the park. The Brighton man has already bagged five Premier League goals from midfield this season and would be an excellent addition to Conte’s side.
