Dejan Kulusevski posts wordless reaction to Cristian Romero after World Cup victory yesterday
Tottenham Hotspur will soon be welcoming another World Cup winner back to the club.
Cristian Romero was fantastic throughout the tournament, and played every minute of yesterday’s thriller against France.
Romero showed his resilience over the past month, recovering from a poor opening performance against Saudi Arabia.
He earned his place in the side back before the end of the group stages, and never looked back.
Romero was one of the players responsible for marking Kylian Mbappe yesterday, which proved to be a near-impossible feat.
The PSG forward became only the second player ever to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final.
However, Romero wasn’t at fault for either penalty, and could do nothing about his sweetly struck second goal.
Although he didn’t register a tackle all game, he showed just how good he can be as a front-foot defender.
He made nine interceptions, constantly trying to nab the ball away from France’s attackers as they played through the lines.
Romero was also brilliant at relieving pressure as Argentina went on to win the World Cup, completing eight of his 10 attempted long passes.
It’s a moment he’ll never forget, and one that has earned him a huge amount of praise since.
Romero wins the World Cup with Argentina
The 24-year-old posted on Instagram after the match with the message, “We are champions of the world, Argentina.”
Tottenham’s official account replied, saying, Vamos Cuti! [Come on Cuti!].”
He also received a message from Spurs teammate Dejan Kulusevski, who loved seeing Romero win the World Cup.
The centre-back will be full of confidence when he returns to Tottenham.
He’s already sent a message back to Spurs after last night’s victory.
Romero won’t be able to celebrate too wildly, with the Premier League restarting this time next week.
Swapping the World Cup final for a visit to the Brentford’s new stadium will certainly bring him back down to Earth.
However, Romero’s reputation has only been enhanced further by winning football’s biggest trophy.
