Cristian Romero sends message directly to Tottenham on Instagram after winning the World Cup

Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero will return to north London with a World Cup winner’s medal around his neck.

He played every minute of an enthralling final that saw Lionel Messi and Argentina write their names into the history books.

Tottenham took to Instagram to congratulate their defender on his achievement.

It was Romero’s first World Cup campaign, and one that cemented his reputation as a top-level central defender.

After a shaky start against Saudi Arabia, the 24-year-old was dropped against Mexico.

However, he returned to the starting line-up for Argentina’s final group game and was a mainstay for the rest of the tournament.

Tottenham were always guaranteed to have a World Cup winner returning to the club.

Captain Hugo Lloris couldn’t lead his side to back-to-back World Cups, failing to save any of Argentina’s penalties.

It was a cruel way for his tournament to end, after making several key saves yesterday.

Romero sent a message to Tottenham after the final, and was clearly delighted with the support he’d received.

Spurs took to Instagram after the final to congratulate their number 17.

They said, “Cristian Romero and Argentina are World Cup Champions. Vamos Cuti!”.

Romero replied with a number of love hearts, and appreciated the message from Tottenham.

The centre-back has received rave reviews for his past few performances from the Argentinian media.

Antonio Conte is likely to have been equally impressed with the defender’s commanding showing in Qatar.

He’ll have to concentrate on picking up Lloris after such a disappointing end to his campaign.

But the confidence carried by Romero into the restart of the Premier League will do Spurs a world of good.

He’ll have to quickly adapt to Conte’s tactics, which are very different from the system he plays with Argentina.

Romero’s message to Tottenham shows how much he cares about the club; which fans will love.

If he could win more silverware while at Spurs, he’d be a hero among Tottenham’s support.
