Danny Murphy has suggested that he has been blown away by the emergence of Lewis Miley as he named the Newcastle United starlet as his newcomer of the year.
It is remarkable to think now that Lewis Miley had not made his first Premier League appearance of the season for the Magpies before mid-November. In fact, he had not even been in the squad for much of the campaign up until that point.
Eddie Howe has seen his squad decimated by injuries this season. But one positive to emerge from that situation is Miley proving that he is good enough for the biggest stages.
Danny Murphy praises Newcastle starlet Lewis Miley
Miley has been ‘magnificent’ at times for Newcastle. So it is not entirely surprising that Danny Murphy picked out the Magpies youngster as the brightest newcomer for 2023.

“Newcastle’s Miley has been a revelation at just 17. Adrenaline usually keeps young players going for a couple of games before a drop-off. Yet he was excellent against Chelsea, PSG and Manchester United all in the same week,” he told the Daily Mail.
“That is phenomenal playing in midfield against top-quality opposition. He clearly has a wonderful football brain, and it’s fantastic to see a local lad doing well in black and white.
“A special mention to Kobbie Mainoo, 18. He has shown terrific maturity and will save Manchester United a fortune in the transfer market.”
January window could be massive for Magpies
The January transfer window could be a big moment for Newcastle. Injuries have hurt them massively. It said everything that Howe could only name seven substitutes for their crucial Champions League tie with AC Milan at St James’ Park earlier this month – and two of those players were goalkeepers.
Newcastle are interested in Kalvin Phillips. And the fans will be hoping that plenty of other links emerge over the coming weeks.
But Miley has shown, whatever happens, that his future in the first-team. Howe may ideally like to manage his minutes a little more to ensure that he does not burn out anytime soon.
But clearly, he has got so much potential and is likely to now remain a permanent fixture in and around the manager’s plans.
