Danny Murphy has issued his verdict on reports that Eric Dier has been given the green light to leave Tottenham Hotspur in the January transfer window.
Eric Dier is entering the final six months of his contract in North London. Unfortunately for the 29-year-old, he has rarely played since Ange Postecoglou was appointed in the summer.
It certainly appears to be ominous that Dier is behind both Emerson Royal and Ben Davies in the pecking order at centre-back. And it may be best for all parties for a move away to be agreed in this window.
Danny Murphy thinks plenty of sides will make a move for Tottenham defender Eric Dier
West Ham are interested in Dier. And the report suggested that Ange Postecoglou has said that he can leave the club.

Dier obviously has the option to sit tight for the rest of his contract and leave on a free transfer in the summer. So that may be something that the defender seriously considers, depending on the offers which come in.
And speaking on talkSPORT, Danny Murphy suggested that he can see a number of clubs attempt to sign the England international.
“I think it’s just one of those situations where you fall out of favour and you lose a bit of confidence. Physically, it’s not suited him the way Tottenham are playing at the moment, in terms of a high line and you need pace,” he said.
“So I don’t think he’s part of the future and he’s obviously done well in years gone by at Tottenham. Probably on a good contract, and they’re not willing to renew it and pay the same money so he’s looking at alternative options. Sometimes it’s a balance between on the field and off the field stuff. He’s a decent, decent player for someone because he can play centre-mid and he can play centre-back. I think there’ll be a few takers for Dier.”
Boost for Spurs if they can sell 29-year-old this month
Ideally for Tottenham, Dier would be sold this month. Obviously, they would not expect to land a huge transfer fee given his contract status. But it would be a boost to move the wages off the books a few months early.
Dier was previously so important to Tottenham. He was ‘brilliant’ for a number of years. And he played a key role in the years where Spurs went incredibly close to winning titles and competing for the biggest prize in Europe.
So you would think that his contract will be a lucrative one.
But at this stage of his deal, the ball is very much in Dier’s court when it comes to deciding when he will leave.
