Tottenham Hotspur youngster Dane Scarlett joined Portsmouth on a season-long loan deal yesterday and Pompey boss Danny Cowley has showered him with praises.

The 18-year-old is one of Tottenham’s finest talents. He has earned praise from Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho over the years, with the current Spurs boss tipping him to have a “brilliant future” at the club.

Scarlett has made 10 appearances for Tottenham’s first team already. He hasn’t scored a goal yet for Spurs at senior level, but he has been prolific for the club’s youth sides over the years.

Now, Scarlett has been given the opportunity to go out on loan, and Cowley is delighted to have him.

Danny Cowley praises Tottenham youngster Dane Scarlett

Speaking after Scarlett’s loan move to Portsmouth was made official, Cowley told the club’s official website: “He’s a boy who has the world at his feet and comes here after a brilliant summer with England, playing a big part in that success.

“There’s an intelligence beyond his years – both in and out of possession – with the timing of his runs and the movement that allows him to win space behind defenders. We think those qualities will carry a real threat and add a different dimension to our team, while against the ball he has an unbelievable work ethic.

“Dane has an infectious energy and I know that the staff at both Tottenham and the England set-up think the world of him. This is his first loan and so it won’t be easy because it’s a new experience, but we’re there to support him, like we have done with many young players in the past.

“We’re really looking forward to working with Dane, who’s an outstanding finisher with both feet and his head. He has a ruthlessness that centre-forwards need.”

Scarlett is a fantastic young talent, there’s no two ways about it.

The teenager was never going to get any game time at Tottenham this term. Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Richarlison are all ahead of him, and the fact that Spurs are in the Champions League and not the Europa League means there was no way Conte was going to use him.

A loan move where he’ll play every game is a fantastic opportunity for Scarlett. He can really show his class under Cowley, and if he has a good season, he’ll give Conte something to think about this time next year.

Portsmouth begin their League One campaign this weekend, and Scarlett will be hoping to make his debut.
