Report: Manchester United wanted to sign 'phenomenal' Tottenham talent this summer

Tottenham Hotspur striker Dane Scarlett signed a new contract at Spurs this week.

Now, it has been reported that Manchester United had recently enquired about signing the Tottenham talent.

According to the Manchester Evening News, outgoing director of football negotiations Matt Judge asked Spurs about Scarlett’s availability last month.

However, Tottenham reportedly told him the 18-year-old forward had agreed a contract extension at Spurs.

United reportedly want to sign one forward with a preference for another.

This is due to a number of attack-minded players who are out of contract at Old Trafford next month.

Juan Mata, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Edinson Cavani all appear to have played for United for the last time.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils have reportedly put Anthony Martial on the transfer list.

Scarlett was approaching the final months of his previous deal at N17.

However, on Wednesday, Tottenham announced that the academy graduate has penned fresh terms until 2026.

“We are delighted to announce that Dane Scarlett has signed a new contract with the club that will run until 2026,” the club wrote in a statement.

“The 18-year-old forward has made seven first team appearances for us this season, most recently as a second-half substitute in our 4-0 win over Leeds United in February.

“Dane has also helped England Under-19s to qualify for this summer’s European Championship, held in Slovakia, with six goals in five appearances, including a brace in a 2-0 win over Portugal during the March international break.”

“I’m really proud and excited”

The player himself expressed his delight at penning a new contract with the Lilywhites.

“I’m really proud and excited to see what holds in the future,” said Scarlett. “It’s been something I’ve been working towards this year. And now it has happened, I’m just happy to be here and still enjoying my football.

“As long as I’m still focused and keep working hard, then everything will plan out for me.”

Scarlett burst on to the scene as a 16-year-old in the 2020-21 Europa League under Jose Mourinho.

He became the youngest player to provide an assist in the competition since Kylian Mbappe.

Scarlett also made his Premier League debut last term, as a substitute in the February win over West Brom.

In July last year, Mourinho tipped the teenager to become “phenomenal” for England.
