Cristian Stellini suggests 'important' Tottenham star is not fit enough to start tonight
Tottenham Hotspur assistant manager Cristian Stellini has hinted that Dejan Kulusevski might not start against Nottingham Forest tonight.
The 22-year-old picked up an injury while on international duty with Sweden back in September, which ruled him out for seven weeks.
However, Kulusevski returned to action at the weekend. The winger played for just over 20 minutes during Sunday’s Premier League defeat to Liverpool.
Kulusevski, whose return was hailed by the Tottenham fans, set up Harry Kane within minutes of coming off the bench.
Spurs will now take on Forest in the third round of the Carabao Cup, and Kulusevski could feature at the City Ground.
However, Stellini made it clear that Tottenham “have to be careful” in terms of not overworking the winger.
“We lost Kulusevski from the last international break,” he told football.london.
“So it’s a long time and we cannot say that Kulusevski can play 90 minutes because it’s a long, long time injury.
“So we have to be careful with this type of injury.”
Stellini is spot on. While Kulusevski is an ‘important‘ player, rushing him back from the off isn’t a good idea.
While Tottenham could do with some joy in the cup competitions, perhaps a good cup run, it’s not worth risking Kulusevski from the start.
‘I want to take it easy’
On Sunday, Kulusevski was asked whether he could be in line for a return to the starting line-up on Wednesday.
“I don’t know, we’ll have to speak about this,” he told football.london.
“Today was actually the first day I really ran a lot because yesterday [Saturday] was 20 minutes training and before that I haven’t trained.
“I want to take it easy. I know it’s only two games left, and I want to be fit. So I can do this holiday good and train and build myself up.”
