Alan Shearer has now been recalling a time when he was so shocked when a teammate of his chose to join Tottenham Hotspur.
Shearer, who had more than his fair share of success in the Premier League, played alongside some of the game’s greats.

And much like he will have done to almost every English side, Shearer will have inflicted some pain on Spurs’ aspirations over the years with the goals he scored.
Perhaps Ange Postecoglou would love to now have a striker with that goal-scoring touch in his side, especially having seen Harry Kane depart.
And whilst that could well be on the horizon this summer, Shearer has now been sharing his reaction to when Les Ferdinand famously chose to join Tottenhahm in 1997.
Speaking on ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast, Shearer admitted his shock that Ferdinand decided to make the switch to North London after such a productive season at Newcastle.
Of course, the striker did then go on to play for Spurs on 145 occasions, scoring 38 goals in the process.
But when you consider he had already netted 50 goals in 84 games at Newcastle, that’s quite the drop off.
Alan Shearer couldn’t believe it when Les Ferdinand chose to join Tottenham
Speaking on the podcast, it seemed as if Shearer still couldn’t really understand the decision to this day.
He said: “Les. I was at Newcastle and we scored 49 goals between us the first season we were there, 96-97 and then in the summer they sold him.

“It was like why? He went to Spurs actually. I think it was for £6 million. It was like oh no, I couldn’t believe it.”
Of course, Ferdinand has since admitted in his retirement that he did regret his decision to join Tottenham and leave Shearer at Newcastle, suggesting the call was made above his head.
And although that wasn’t a move that was necessarily a huge success for Tottenham either, there’s reason to believe a similar mistake, if you will call it that, would be avoided in the modern era.
Ange Postecoglou and Daniel Levy seem to have an incredibly productive relationship, and there’s a lot of reason for optimism moving forward.
That being said, Gary Lineker has now named the three Tottenham signings he thinks have been a huge success.
