‘Could be done’: Phil Hay discusses chance of Leeds signing star Marcelo Bielsa ‘likes’

Phil Hay has told his Athletic podcast that Leeds could strike a deal to sign Reading midfielder John Swift in January, stating that the soon-to-be free agent is a player Marcelo Bielsa likes.

Swift, 26, is out of contract at the end of the season. It means that interested parties could sign the ex-Chelsea man for a cut-price fee in January, or for nothing when his contract expires in June 2022.

The England Under-21 ace has been on fire this season for Reading. Clocking up 21 Championship appearances for the Royals, he has had a hand in 17 goals – scoring eight times, and laying on nine assists.

Bielsa has gone on record in the past, stating he is a fan of the midfielder. Now, The Sheffield Star report that Leeds and Wolves are considering moves for the midfielder in the coming weeks and months.

“The sort of option that could be done, in the sort of price bracket they would want to get into, with the sort of player Bielsa likes. He does like Swift, in the same way he likes Lewis O’Brien,” Bielsa told his podcast.

Hay on Swift: Midfielder would be a stunning signing for Leeds

Following the initial links, there was a distinct mixed feeling above Leeds fans. Some looked at his stats and believe that he would be a brilliant addition. Others feel he is a Championship player.

But for those that have the opinion of the latter – the Whites signed Stuart Dallas, Adam Forshaw, Luke Ayling and Patrick Bamford from Championship clubs. Plenty of the current squad were Championship players.

If Bielsa likes a player, then Leeds fans should trust him – he is an extremely good judge of character, and player. Swift seemingly looks like the ideal addition in midfield at Elland Road.
