Conte suggests he hopes to start Tottenham star a lot more often now

Antonio Conte has told Tottenham Hotspur’s Twitter account that Steven Bergwijn has now proved just how important he is to his squad, and expressed his hope that he will get into the best condition possible in the weeks ahead.

Bergwijn has had such a turbulent time since Conte’s arrival. He has featured in a number of games, been left out in several. He had made a game-changing impact against West Ham in the Carabao Cup. And he had also been heavily linked with a move away.

In fact, some may have anticipated that he would be leaving this month. Ajax have reportedly seen a £15 million bid rejected.

However, Bergwijn appears to have just enjoyed his defining moment in a Tottenham shirt. He scored twice in stoppage-time to help Spurs come from 2-1 down when the 90 minutes were up against Leicester, to win 3-2.

Understandably, the celebrations were wild. Bergwijn seemingly had to be hauled back by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg before he risked getting another yellow card.

It certainly could be a massive moment for the 24-year-old. And Conte suggested that he hopes that it proves to be a turning point for Bergwijn.

“Now, I hope to bring him in the best physical condition to give me the opportunity to start with him and not only on the bench,” he told Tottenham’s Twitter account.

“But today we have another important player in our squad.”

Bergwijn surely going nowhere after Tottenham heroics

Of course, Tottenham will be wary of getting carried away with their win. There is still plenty of work ahead. And there are still problems for Conte to address.

With that, Bergwijn’s record to date cannot be forgotten entirely. He has not contributed enough so far. However, there is surely absolutely no chance of him leaving this month.

It is clear what Conte can do with players when their relationship clicks. And Bergwijn produced a cameo that other Tottenham bosses probably would have struggled to get out of him.

The frustration concerning Bergwijn centres around the quality that he clearly has.

But Tottenham fans will now hope that something has changed for Bergwijn. Conte obviously feels that there is a lot more to come from the forward.
