Report: Tottenham reject title-winners' £15m bid for club's 'most skilful' player

Tottenham Hotspur have rejected a £15 million bid from Ajax for Steven Bergwijn, but The Times reports that the Eredivisie side still hope to have the forward signed by this weekend.

Bergwijn continues to be linked with a move away in the January transfer window. It was reported by 90min this week that Tottenham were actually yet to make a decision on the 24-year-old’s future. Meanwhile, they suggested that Newcastle were eyeing a move.

It was Ajax who seemed to make the first move of the window however. They had previously had a loan bid rejected for the former PSV Eindhoven man.

And they have tested Tottenham’s resolve to keep Bergwijn for a second time. The Times reports that they had offered £15 million for the Dutchman.

However, Spurs have knocked the latest bid. It is claimed that they want to recoup more of the £25 million that they spent to bring Bergwijn to North London.

But Ajax have not been deterred in their pursuit of Bergwijn. The Times claims that they plan to make an improved bid. And they ideally hope to lure Bergwijn away from Tottenham in time for their next game this Sunday.

Improved Ajax bid for Steven Bergwijn will leave Tottenham with plenty to ponder

Bergwijn has endured a tough time in the Premier League. He has only shown glimpses of the player that prompted Antonio Conte to recently label him a ‘very good‘ striker. Dele Alli meanwhile, claimed that he is the ‘most skilful‘ player at the club.

Conte may have been relaxed about the situation. If he stays, he could have a role to play. However, Tottenham should not stand in Bergwijn’s way should a decent bid come in.

Ajax are reportedly set to improve on the £15 million they have already offered. And if that goes some way towards the £25 million Tottenham paid, then Spurs will surely have to give a sale some serious thought.
