Conte provides exciting update on Tottenham future of Romero

Antonio Conte has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur have an obligation to buy Cristian Romero at the end of his loan rather than an option, in comments reported by The Athletic.

Romero has created a real buzz amongst Tottenham fans in the last few days. He made his return to the side for their FA Cup tie with Brighton. And he went on to produce an outstanding display for Spurs.

It has been a frustrating season for the Argentinian since his arrival. When he has been out on the pitch, he has been absolutely brilliant. However, getting him out on the pitch has been difficult at times.

There was always optimism however, that he would come good. He was named Serie A’s best defender last season. And he went into this season having helped Argentina win the Copa América.

And with that, it was always difficult to imagine Tottenham not taking up the option to make his move permanent. However, it would appear that the decision over his future may be out of their hands anyway.

Conte has suggested that there is no expectation that Romero will return to Atalanta at the end of the season.

“He’s on loan but we have an obligation to buy,” he said, as reported by The Athletic. “We bought him!”

“He is perfect for this league. But if you can play in this league you can play in all the leagues in the world.”

Romero news hands Tottenham a nice boost midway through the campaign

The Athletic notes that the situation is not quite as simple as being an obligation. But it is suggested that Tottenham will have no issue meeting the conditions needed to make the move for Romero permanent.

Of course, Spurs fans would have been stunned had the centre-back left the club in the summer. But the comments from Conte still hand the club a boost.

The Italian labelled the defender an ‘important‘ player this week. And if he can stay fit, he is going to have a massive role to play as Tottenham push for the top four.
