Tottenham Hotspur will hope to qualify for the Champions League knockout rounds when they host Sporting CP tonight.

Antonio Conte’s Spurs sit top of Group D on 4 points. Marseille and Sporting, meanwhile, sit second and third respectively on 3 points.

And Tottenham may have just been handed a huge boost for the meeting with the Primeira Liga giants.

Cristian Romero missed out on Tottenham’s matchday squad against Newcastle United at the weekend.

Antonio Conte cited fatigue as the reason Romero and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg weren’t in the squad.

Ahead of the Sporting clash, Conte said the duo remained doubts.

“About Pierre and Cuti, tomorrow morning, we will see,” the Tottenham boss told the Spurs media team on Tuesday.

“Today, they had half of a training session, and the situation wasn’t so positive.

“But we are talking about two important players for us and it’s right to wait until the end, because tomorrow’s game is really important.”

However, TyC Sports journalist Gaston Edul said overnight that Romero only had muscle fatigue and will be available.

Romero himself has dropped a big hint about his potential involvement tonight with a cryptic message on his personal Instagram page.

The centre-back posted a short promotional video of tonight’s game on to his story, which is normally a trend players in the matchday squad follow.

Solidity at the back

This is great news for Tottenham, because Romero is such a crucial player for Conte’s side.

One of the biggest requirements of Conte’s system is solidity at the back.

Eric Dier and Ben Davies have done well alongside Romero, but neither of them would’ve been as good without the Argentine.

Romero’s positioning, quality on the ball and aggressiveness in tackles has really made Spurs better at the back.

He is proving to be a ‘superstar‘ signing, and the fact that he’s only 24 means he’ll only get better.
