Marvin Compper’s move to Celtic has not exactly panned out as planned and it would be no surprise if Brendan Rodgers looked to offload the defender in January.

However, it may not be that simple. First of all, it appears that Compper wants to stay and fight for his place at Parkhead.

He told Bild: “I still have a contract until 2020. Of course, I don’t want to sit on the bench. Already in August Celtic suggested a change of club. But I don’t want to get away from the pitch so easily. I hope for my chance and want to play.”

It is tough to offload a player with years to run on his deal, especially one who does not have any real desire to leave; or perhaps more accurately, no desire to give up the money he stands to earn by remaining at Celtic until 2020.

He has also spoken out against Brendan Rodgers, claiming he feels he deserves to be in the side. That attitude is unlikely to impress potential suitors.

Compper has admitted that the club wanted rid of him and when that’s the case, it doesn’t make any sense to stay. Perhaps there were no bidders, which only adds to the sense that Celtic will find it very tough to offload a player who is also the wrong side of 30 now…
