It’s not been an easy start to the season for Liverpool compared to their usual fantastic standards under Jurgen Klopp.

They find themselves stuck in mid-table in the Premier League, although have progressed in the Champions League.

Speaking on TalkSPORT (6/11 8:54am), Tony Cascarino has been speaking about what Liverpool need to improve.

Cascarino identified that Liverpool need to bring in a big signing in midfield to lift the entire team.

There have been a number of reports linking Liverpool with Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham.

The 19-year-old has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting young players in the world.

He’s already captained Dortmund, and looks set to play a big part for England at the World Cup.

However, Cascarino thinks there’s a player that Liverpool should be looking at ahead of Bellingham.

The TalkSPORT pundit believes that Liverpool should try and sign West Ham midfielder Declan Rice.

Liverpool should sign Rice – Cascarino

When asked who could improve Liverpool’s midfield, Cascarino said he would go for Rice over Bellingham.

“Bellingham will be one that they’re looking at, but I would still probably go for Declan Rice,” Cascarino said.

“I think he’s a very assured player, a very complete player.

“So yes, I would have Rice over Bellingham, I think his consistency and the level he’s played at for a long time.

“And yes, Bellingham can prove to be an absolute star because he’s got all the qualities to be a great player.

“But I do think Declan Rice is a ready-made player to go into a side that’s Champions League quality and make a major impact.”

Both players are going to force Liverpool to break the bank if they decide to make a move next summer.

The Daily Mail believe that West Ham value Rice at £150m, which would be Liverpool’s record transfer by quite some distance.

Bellingham v Rice – who should Klopp go for?

Both players would walk into Jurgen Klopp’s team at this time, given the injuries they’ve suffered and poor form of some of their midfielders.

Bellingham can play a number of roles in the middle of the park, but Rice is the better defensive midfielder.

Cascarino’s belief that Liverpool should sign Rice because he’s a Champions League quality player is harsh on Bellingham.

The 19-year-old has been brilliant for Dortmund in Europe this season, scoring in each of their first four games in the competition.

Journalist Dean Jones believes Liverpool might make a move for Rice if they can’t get Bellingham.

Liverpool fans will be delighted if either player arrives at Anfield in the near future.
