Barcelona are considering the sale of Frenkie de Jong amid reports Tottenham have made a bid for the Dutchman.

That is according to Sport in Spain.

So, what is the latest on Frenkie de Jong and Tottenham? Let’s take a look…

Barcelona open to Frenkie de Jong sale

Well – according to Sport – Barcelona would ideally like to keep the Netherlands international, but are considering a sale due to a number of factors.

Firstly, it is said that De Jong earns more than any other player at the Camp Nou, so removing his wages from the salary bill would be a huge boost in terms of Financial Fair Play.

The Barcelona No.21 is believed to earn £231,000-a-week.

Sport then explain how Barcelona would be willing to cash in for a significant fee for similar reasons, after a period of chaotic spending on the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele hamstrung the Spanish giants financially.

Gerard Romero claimed that Tottenham’s bid is worth £51m.

De Jong himself is believed to be content with life in Catalonia, and has just become a father.

However, Sport state that discussions over a new contract have hit a brick wall, and the Dutchman would be open to leaving Barcelona to join a club capable of winning the UEFA Champions League.

Tottenham should not stretch themselves to sign Frenkie de Jong

The 26-year-old is undoubtedly a superb footballer, although Spurs should not overexert themselves financially to secure an agreement.

Ange Postecoglou already has a solid midfield department with the likes of Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr, Rodrigo Bentancur, Oliver Skipp, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and January signing Lucas Bergvall.

The latter – a Sweden international – has coincidentally been compared to De Jong, and it would be unfair to shove him even further down the pecking order.

Therefore, Tottenham can certainly use that £51m more wisely – to say the least.
