Cody Gakpo got his first start of the season for Liverpool as he impressed in the 3-1 comeback win against AC Milan at the San Siro.

Christian Pulisic put the home side ahead with an early goal, but the Reds responded through Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk and Dominik Szoboszlai to get all three points in Arne Slot’s first UEFA Champions League game in charge of the club.

Gakpo started alongside Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah in attack and was stationed on the left flank.

While he didn’t get a goal, he notched up an assist and did his reputation no harm with a dazzling display as he was a constant threat to the Milan backline.

Speaking after the game, Clarence Seedorf was full of praise for the Dutchman but believes he isn’t playing in his best position for Liverpool.

Gakpo has enjoyed more of a central role for the Netherlands and impressed at the 2022 FIFA World Cup as well as Euro 2024.

Seedorf highlighted his role for the national team and feels Slot should use him in a similar way for Liverpool.

“I like what he did in the World Cup, I like to have him a little bit more free,” Seedorf said on Amazon Prime Video (10:12 PM).

“Playing on the left side constantly, of course, he can do it, but I think you can get more out of him. He’s more restricted I believe when he plays on the wing.”

Gakpo has been described as an ‘amazing’ player by Rafael van der Vaart and Liverpool will hope he carries on in the same vein in the coming weeks.

Gakpo’s stats vs Milan

The Dutchman went on a fantastic run to tee up Szoboszlai for the third goal and earned himself a Sofascore rating of 8, making him the highest-rated Liverpool player on the pitch.

He made two key passes and had as many shots on target, having 43 touches of the ball and completing 82% of his passes (18/22).

Gakpo also completed four dribbles to cap off a fine display as he was substituted with around 20 minutes left on the clock.

Luis Diaz has started each of Liverpool’s four Premier League games so far but with Gakpo making such a massive impression against Milan, it remains to be seen if he keeps his place in the team against Bournemouth.
