'Tottenham want him': Manager admits Spurs are trying to sign his £20m player this summer

Middlesbrough manager, Chris Wilder, has confirmed that Tottenham are indeed trying to put together a deal to lure Djed Spence away from the club.

Spence has been linked with a move to Spurs all summer and a deal has looked all but agreed. However, in recent days there have been rumblings emerging to suggest that both clubs are struggling to come to an agreement over the fee.

And Wilder, who was speaking in a press conference to the Northern Echo, has admitted that Spence can leave for Tottenham, but only for the right price.

“There’s always three parties involved in any deal, and it’s got to be right for all three parties for it to happen. It’s got to be right for the player, and obviously, from the noises, it sounds as though [Spurs] is where he wants to go. Tottenham want him, and we’re prepared for that, but it’s got to be right for us too. It all needs to marry up,” Wilder said.

“We’re a reasonable football club, but some of the numbers you sometimes get quoted are ridiculous, and we’re not going to allow anyone to take advantage of us.”

Spence enjoyed a fine season with Nottingham Forest as he helped them to promotion last term. However, Tottenham’s interest has swung things, and Spence is thought to be keen on signing for Antonio Conte’s side.

TBR’s View: Tottenham Need To Get To The Point With Spence

Fabio Paratici needs to realise that he’s dealing with two old school operators here with Chris Wilder and Steve Gibson.

Put simply, they won’t be taken for a ride. They want the right money for Spence and that money is thought to be around the £20m mark.

Tottenham need to simply crack on with this. It sounds like they are digging in over minor financial details and it could end up being a nightmare for both them and Spence.
