Chris Sutton suggests Chelsea striker almost made a very strange move on transfer deadline day

Chelsea allowed striker Nicolas Jackson to join Bayern Munich on transfer deadline day and almost loaned out another forward as well.

Chelsea have again brought in a number of players this summer as the spending continues at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have snapped up Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United, and have also brought in the likes of Jorrel Hato, Jamie Gittens, Liam Delap and Joao Pedro this summer.

Chelsea have started with seven points from three games, though Enzo Maresca’s side still have a long way to go.

After recalling Marc Guiu from his loan spell at Sunderland, Chelsea allowed Nicolas Jackson to join Bayern Munich and bring a real saga to an end.

Delap’s injury against Fulham on Saturday saw Chelsea scrap Jackson’s move, but the Senegalese forward completed his move to Germany on deadline day.

Chris Sutton on David Datro Fofana’s Celtic stance

Jackson could have been followed out of Stamford Bridge by another striker before the deadline.

As reported by Sky Sports, Chelsea forward David Datro Fofana agreed to join Charlton Athletic – and snubbed a move to Celtic in the process.

The Bhoys were desperate for a new striking addition, but couldn’t tempt Fofana up to Glasgow.

Deadline day ended in disappointment for Fofana, though, as Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph added that Fofana’s loan move to Charlton had collapsed late on Monday.

Charlton ran out of time to finalise the deal, meaning Fofana must now stay at Chelsea for the foreseeable future.

The situation left former Chelsea and Celtic striker Chris Sutton absolutely baffled, as he couldn’t believe Fofana chose Charlton over Celtic in the first place.

Speaking on BBC Radio Five Live’s Monday Night Club, Sutton even joked that Fofana is an ‘idiot’ for snubbing Celtic.

Sutton couldn’t understand the decision to reject Celtic for Charlton, adding that the snub wasn’t great for Celtic, but wasn’t much better for Fofana.

Sutton added that the transfer window has been a nightmare for Celtic, highlighting that Kyogo Furuhashi – sold in January – and winger Nicolas Kuhn have not been replaced.

“God… what an idiot,” said Sutton. “Going to Charlton instead of Celtic, really? It’s not [great for Celtic], but it’s not great for the player.

“It’s been a nightmare for Celtic. Joe will know the quality of Kyogo, they’ve never replaced him, never replaced Nicolas Kuhn, they should have done,” he added.

Options still available for David Datro Fofana

The English and Scottish transfer windows closed on Monday night, but Fofana does still have options if he wants to leave Chelsea.

The transfer window closes in the Netherlands on Tuesday night, while markets in Belgium, Poland, Romania, and Switzerland are open until next week.

Saudi Arabia and Turkiye could appeal as well, especially after Fofana spent time with Göztepe last season.

The window closes in Saudi Arabia in nine days, with the Turkish window open for one day longer.

Fofana has struggled to make an impact with Chelsea since joining from Molde in January 2023.

The 22-year-old has been on loan at Union Berlin, Burnley and Göztepe and really needs first-team action, especially with the Africa Cup of Nations on the horizon.

Chelsea may look to find Fofana a new home in the coming days, utilising those open markets to resolve the striker’s future after deadline day disappointment.
